Develop State-of-the-Art iPhone/iPad Apps with MonoTouch and .NET!
Are you an experienced C#/.NET developer who wants to reach the huge iPhone/iPad market? Now, you can create great iOS apps without first mastering Objective-C and Apple's development toolset. With MonoTouch, you can leverage the skills you already have to create powerful apps that can be sold in Apple's App Store or deployed throughout your organization. In Learning MonoTouch, Michael Bluestein helps you get started with MonoTouch fast and make the most of its remarkably robust capabilities.
The book first walks you through setting up your MonoTouch development environment, explaining how MonoTouch abstracts the iOS SDK to permit development against native iOS classes from C#. Through simple examples, you'll start building working apps, establishing a firm foundation for more advanced coding. One step at a time, you'll master increasingly sophisticated cases through practical examples. Bluestein even shows you how to leverage powerful .NET tools in your iOS apps, including LINQ.
Coverage includes
* Applying common iOS development patterns and techniques in C#
* Using MonoTouch to handle memory management and garbage collection
* Structuring MonoTouch apps for the MVC design pattern
* Making the most of iOS user interface classes
* Leveraging the address book, camera access, email, and iOS media features
* Customizing tables and navigation for richer experiences and better performance
* Accessing the iOS Core Graphics and Core Animation subsystems
* Building iOS location-based applications with Core Location and MapKit
* Consuming web services from MonoTouch
* Integrating iOS and .NET networking capabilities
* Saving data with the ADO.NET provider to SQLite, .NET serialization, and NSUserDefaults
All code samples are available for download at github.com/mikebluestein.
Note: This book was written using MonoTouch 3 and Xcode 3, which were the latest versions at the time. Newer versions of MonoTouch and Xcode have since been released with a variety of changes to the development tooling. There is a document about transitioning to the new tooling at docs.xamarin.com/ios/tutorials/transitioning_from_xcode_3_to_xcode_4.

These Transactions publish archival papers in the broad area of Petri nets and other models of concurrency, ranging from theoretical work to tool support and industrial applications. ToPNoC issues are published as LNCS volumes, and hence are widely distributed and indexed. This Journal has its own Editorial Board which selects papers based on a rigorous two-stage refereeing process. ToPNoC contains: revised versions of a selection of the best papers from workshops and tutorials at the annual Petri net conferences, special sections/issues within particular subareas (similar to those published in the Advances in Petri Nets series), other papers invited for publication in ToPNoC, papers submitted directly to ToPNoC by their authors. The third volume of ToPNoC contains revised and extended versions of a selection of the best papers from the workshops held at the 29th International Conference on Application and Theory of Petri Nets and Other Models of Concurrency and from the 8th and 9th Workshops and Tutorials on Practical Use of Coloured Petri Nets and the CPN Tools. The 10 papers provide good coverage of a diverse range of topics including workflow systems, network protocols, mobility, intelligent transport systems, the state explosion problem, Petri net synthesis and the p-calculus. The volume offers a good mixture of theory, tools and practical applications related to concurrency and provides a useful snapshot of current research.

Written in easy-to-understand language, this book is a must-read if you'd like to create out-of-the-ordinary, yet simple games. Authors Alexandre Lobao and Ellen Hatton demonstrate the ease of producing multimedia games with Managed DirectX 9.0 and programming the games with Visual Basic .NET on the Everett version of Microsoft's Visual Studio.
The authors emphasize simplicity, but still explore important concepts of Managed DirectX 9.0, such as Direct3D, DirectSound, DirectMusic (using the COM interface), DirectInput (including force-feedback joysticks), DirectShow, and DirectPlay. Additional chapters discuss game programming technologies: Speech API for generating character voices, GDI+ for simple games, and multithreading. A bonus chapter even shows you how to port a simple game to a Pocket PC.
The book includes two chapters' worth of sample games. The first presents a game with simple features; the second extends that game and presents additional concepts. A library of game programming helper classes is also created, step by step, in both chapters.

Visual Basic.NET includes a host of new features that enable developers to maximize their productivity. In addition to a new unified IDE (integrated development environment) VB developers can take advantage of the new server explorer to easily integrate server-side components into their applications, the shared task list to help organize code, dynamic help for instant access to pertinent information, and macros to customize, extend and integrate the Visual Studio environment. Visual Basic.NET delivers on all of the top requests heard from developers over the past few years. This includes first-class object oriented constructs such as implementation inheritance and structured exception handling as well as power features such as free threading. In addition, new graphical designers for developing Windows and Web applications as well as for working with XML and serverside components will make VB developers more versatile than they've ever been in the past.

The process of producing components to final net-shapes is fast becoming a desirable goal for metal working industries. This is due to a combination of factors such as the development of new materials and escalating energy costs. Computer Applications in Near Net-Shape Operations addresses the design, analysis and simulation of near net-shape operations using some of the most advanced computer techniques and tools available. Topics covered include: Sheet metal forming operations: progressive stamping, fine blanking, nesting, flat pattering, bending and nibbling; Die design, construction and NC programming of wire EDM; Bulk metal forming processes such as cold upsetting and close-die forging; Injection mould design, analysis and simulation; Computer-aided design of CNC machines for near net-shape operations; Intelligent progressive die design system IPD. This collection of the latest developments from leading experts in the field will be of interest to practising engineers, graduate students and researchers of metal forming, stamping, mould and die design.

In the early days of the Web a need was recognized for a language to display 3D objects through a browser. An HTML-like language, VRML, was proposed in 1994 and became the standard for describing interactive 3D objects and worlds on the Web. 3D Web courses were started, several best-selling books were published, and VRML continues to be used today. However VRML, because it was based on HTML, is a stodgy language that is not easy to incorporate with other applications and has been difficult to add features to. Meanwhile, applications for interactive 3D graphics have been exploding in areas such as medicine, science, industry, and entertainment. There is a strong need for a set of modern Web-based technologies, applied within a standard extensible framework, to enable a new generation of modeling & simulation applications to emerge, develop, and interoperate. X3D is the next generation open standard for 3D on the web. It is the result of several years of development by the Web 3D Consortium's X3D Task Group. Instead of a large monolithic specification (like VRML), which requires full adoption for compliance, X3D is a component-based architecture that can support applications ranging from a simple non-interactive animation to the latest streaming or rendering applications. X3D replaces VRML, but also provides compatibility with existing VRML content and browsers. Don Brutzman organized the first symposium on VRML and is playing a similar role with X3D; he is a founding member of the consortium. Len Daly is a professional member of the consortium and both Len and Don have been involved with the development of the standard from the start.
* The first book on the new way to present interactive 3D content over the Web, written by two of the designers of the standard
* Plentiful illustrations and screen shots in the full color text
* Companion website with extensive content, including the X3D specification, sample code and applications, content creation tools, and demos of compatible Web browsers
