The annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) aims to provide a forum that brings together researchers and scientists from academia as well as man- ers and engineers from industry to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks. AccessNets 2008 was the third edition of this event, which was successfully held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, during October 15–17, 2008. The conference consisted of two keynote addresses, five invited talks, seven technical sessions, and two panel sessions. Leonid Kazovsky from Stanford University and Kevin Schneider, Chief Technology Officer of ADTRAN, delivered their exciting keynote - dresses on “Future Evolution of Broadband Access,” and “Carrier Ethernet and the Evo- ing Access Networks,” respectively. ThisvolumeofLNCScontainstheproceedingsofthe6thEuropeanPerformance EngineeringWorkshop,held at ImperialCollegeLondon during July 9-10,2009. Thiswasthe?rstintheEPEWseriestobeheldintheUK,followingonfromthe highly successful workshops that were held in Toledo (2004), Versailles (2005), Budapest (2006), Berlin (2007) and Palma de Mallorca (2008). As with previousEPEW workshops,the event was supported by submissions from all over the world, including Asia, the Middle East, North America, as well as Europe. There were 33 submissions in total of which 13 were selected for full papers and four as short papers. I would like to commend the diligent e?orts of the Programme Committee, who returned a complete set of reviews - four per paper - which is most unusual. This enabled and enhanced the week-long programme discussion which selected the papers presented here. The combination of fast, low-latency networks and high-performance, distributed tools for mathematical software has resulted in widespread, affordable scientific computing facilities. Practitioners working in the fields of computer communication networks, distributed computing, computational algebra and numerical analysis have been brought together to contribute to this volume and explore the emerging distributed and parallel technology in a scientific environment. This collection includes surveys and original research on both software infrastructure for parallel applications and hardware and architecture infrastructure. Among the topics covered are switch-based high-speed networks, ATM over local and wide area networks, network performance, application support, finite element methods, eigenvalue problems, invariant subspace decomposition, QR factorization and Todd-Coxseter coset enumeration.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 1998 International Conference and Exhibition on High-Performance Computing and Networking, HPCN EUROPE 1998, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in April 1998.
The book presents 85 revised full papers together with 58 posters selected out of a total of more than 220 Submissions. The book is divided in topical sections on industrial and general applications, computational science, and HPF+. All current aspects in high-performance computing and networking are covered, in particular simulation, visualisation, medical applications, nummerical computations, parallel and distributed processing, software engineering, computer and network architectures.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Modeling Techniques and Tools for Computer Performance Evaluation, held in St. Malo, France, in June 1997.
The volume presents 17 revised full papers carefully selected by the program committee for the proceedings; also included is an extended abstract of an invited talk. The collection of papers presented represents state-of-the-art work in computer performance evaluation. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on High Performance Computing, HiPC 2000, held in Bangalore, India in December 2000. The 46 revised papers presented together with five invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 127 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on system software, algorithms, high-performance middleware, applications, cluster computing, architecture, applied parallel processing, networks, wireless and mobile communication systems, and large scale data mining.

I wish to welcome all of you to the International Symposium on High Perf- mance Computing 2000 (ISHPC 2000) in the megalopolis of Tokyo. After having two great successes with ISHPC’97 (Fukuoka, November 1997) and ISHPC’99 (Kyoto, May 1999), many people have requested that the symposium would be held in the capital of Japan and we have agreed. I am very pleased to serve as Conference Chair at a time when high p- formance computing (HPC) has a signi?cant in?uence on computer science and technology. In particular, HPC has had and will continue to have a signi?cant - pact on the advanced technologies of the “IT” revolution. The many conferences and symposiums that are held on the subject around the world are an indication of the importance of this area and the interest of the research community. Petri nets offer a mathematically defined technique for the specification, design, analysis, verification and performance evaluation of concurrent distributed systems. They offer not only precise semantics and a theoretical foundation, but also a graphical form that facilitates the understanding of both information and control flow within the same formalism. As an intuitively appealing graphical form of presentation, Petri nets are the model of choice in various applications.
Communications networks, ranging from traditional telecommunication systems to advanced Internet-based information services, are inherently distributed and comprise systems with concurrently operating components. This volume presents a selection of the latest advances in the use of Petri nets for the modeling, analysis and management of communication networks and systems in the broadest sense of these terms.
